Female and male souls, bearers of happiness and unhappiness, fertility and barrenness: all come together in the landscape of a “normal” city. In THE CITIZENS, you observe a community that welcomes figures from folklore: mermaids in the cafe and ancient ghosts in the office are now part of the city. Will the city treat all mythical creatures equally? Or will the prejudices against them persist? And what if they are actually legitimate citizens?
THE CITIZENS brings together ritual dance and the embodiment of work and leisure. In the performance, folklore is used as a source of resistance and emancipation, serving as the structure for an absurd, dark and playful modern dance experience.
Kseniia Komoza. She studied the master Contemporary dance, theatre and dramaturgy at the University of Utrecht.
This is a performance of New Makers at Speels Collectief. Kseniia wanted to develop further after obtaining her master’s degree and chose to do dance research at Speels Collectief. THE CITIZENS is the result of that.
